The winter months are over and the traditional nutcrackers from the Erzgebirge, angels & miners make room for the colorful flower children. With her cheerful and childlike charisma the flower children from the Erzgebirge prepare all collectors and lovers of the wood art from the Erzgebirge a delight. Depending on the model, the wooden figures, which are only a few inches (centimeters) in size, hold a detailed flower in your hands and just make everyone happy. Extremely popular are the delicate figures as birthday congratulator. But also as a souvenir or small attention to on any occasion, the cheerful flower children enchant everyone.
What distinguishes the flower children?
The flower children exist as boys and as girls. No two flower children are the same, every one is unique. With great attention to detail, the individual figures are made in the finest handwork. Each model is carefully painted and is unique in its facial expressions, gestures and clothing. Frequently the dresses of the flower children are kept in pastel shades. Each child holds either a flower or a branch in hand.
The special thing about the children's flowers is the detailed representation as well as the oversized size compared to the flower children themselves. Each child is provided with a different flower: With their spring, summer and autumn flowers, the flower children are a companion for the whole year.

The manufactory, to which the birth of the flower children can be traced, was founded in 1915 by Grete Wendt and Margarete Kühn. As a graduate of the Royal Saxon School of Applied Arts in Dresden, the two founders mastered the demanding and difficult crafts. Even today, the family-owned company Wendt & Kühn is served by the descendants of the two founders.
In 1929 the first flower child was born in the small town Grünhainichen in the Erzgebirge: It was a girl with a marguerite. The choice of flower here is no coincidence: it acts around Grete Wendt's favourite flower. By 1933/34 the number of flower children had grown to six, which are still uninterrupted in the company's product range today. By 1937, the flower children's flock to a total of 18 pieces. At the request of many collectors, the figures will be displayed accordingly of their historical models.
In the meantime, the small, cheerful flower children are stored in several manufactories in the Erzgebirge and enjoy great popularity far beyond the country's borders. To the most famous and popular flower child figures include, in addition to the flower children of Wendt & Kühn, the flower children of Hubrig Volkskunst and WEHA Kunst.

Like all figures of craftsmanship from the Erzgebirge, the flower children are also made with special care. For this purpose, the piece of wood to be processed is first placed on an axis tensioned and rotated at high speed. Thus, the wood can be removed piece by piece in individual places until the desired shape is achieved. The individual pieces of turning are then sanded smooth and glued together. Fabric folds on skirts or trousers as well as other details are carefully sanded into the figures. Now follows the color scheme of the flower children: After of a primer, the individual figures are carefully painted by hand and are given their individual and unique character.
